The Peoria County Highway Department will start construction on Old Galena Road on Monday, April 3, 2023. This project includes new pavement, improved drainage, and the addition of a left turn lane and new traffic signals leading to Mossville Elementary School. The scope of the project is from Boy Scout Road/Neal Lane to the roundabout, and from the roundabout to Illinois Route 29. Please see the attached map.
The project will be constructed in stages. Stage 1 is expected to last through June 2023. During this time, all traffic on Old Galena Road between Boy Scout Road and the roundabout will be shifted to the southbound lanes. Engine Drive will be closed at the intersection with Old Galena Road.
The entrance to Mossville Elementary School (Feleccia Drive) will remain open. The existing traffic signals will be converted to stop signs.
Old Galena Road, between the entrance to JLW Holdings and Illinois Route 29, will be closed. A detour will be posted on Illinois Route 29 and Cedar Hills Drive. This work will also cause southbound traffic on Illinois Route 29 to be shifted with narrowed lanes.
Stage 2 is expected to last from the end of June until the end of October 2023. Weekly project updates are available at https://www.peoriacounty.gov/385. Updated information will be released via press release, website updates, and social media as Stage 2 approaches.
Funding for this $5.0 million project came from Motor Fuel Tax, Rebuild IL, and Federal Rural Surface Transportation funding. This project will complete the reconstruction of Old Galena Road. Reconstruction began in 2015 with the construction of the roundabout and continued in various stages, as funding allowed, over the last eight years.
