Murderer Given 80-Year Sentence

December 28, 2023, Peoria, IL – Today, Lionell L. Harris, 31, received 80 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the shooting death of Daryl Keller, 36, on November 19, 2018, in Peoria’s south end. During the trial last October, prosecutors presented evidence that Harris shot Keller several times at close range, including two shots to his back.

Harris feuded with Judge John Vespa throughout today’s hearing.  He eventually asked to leave and refused to participate in the remainder of the hearing.  In arguing for a lengthy sentence, Assistant State’s Attorney Larry Evans argued that Keller was shot and “left to die on the side of the road.”  Evans also pointed out that Harris has consistently broken jail rules while awaiting trial and has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for both residential burglary and attempt burglary.  Harris will have to serve 100% of this sentence.
