February 5, 2024, Peoria, IL – Thanks to quick action from Peoria Police Detectives and a tip from another county, a possible school shooting by a Peoria teen has been stopped. Peoria Police Detectives received a tip that a group of teens, one from Peoria and two from another county, were using the chat messaging platform Discord to plan a school shooting. The chat also discussed their plan to stockpile weapons. The Peoria teen detailed the threat in a 29-page journal recovered by police. The journal included drawings, building layouts, and research into the juvenile court system and potential criminal charges.
Today, the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office filed three charges against the 16-year-old: Making a Terrorist Threat, a Class X Felony, Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony, and Conspiracy, a Class 1 Felony. The teen is currently in the custody of the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center and will remain there to ensure the community's safety. Because of the serious nature of the threats, the State’s Attorney’s Office also filed a Petition to Transfer the matter to adult court requesting the teen be tried as an adult.
“School safety is a top priority. I want to reassure the public that thanks to the quick action by law enforcement, there is currently no school or student in danger from this threat. This is just one example of how we are constantly monitoring this area and focusing on keeping students safe.” Jodi M. Hoos, Peoria County State’s Attorney
At this time, the State’s Attorney’s Office cannot share more detailed information regarding the teens involved or any school subject to the planning, as the offender is a juvenile.
